Traces of a Multicultural Past

Ayaklıalan Church is a stone church ruin on a hilltop in Ayaklıalan village, in Asarcık district. Known to have belonged to the local Greek community, its exact construction date is unknown, though the remains are attributed to the Byzantine period.

Architecture

The church was built using stone masonry. Its roof has not survived, and the frescoes once known to decorate its walls have also been lost over time; the stonework and door frame, however, still stand.

Current State

The structure has been damaged in the past by illegal treasure hunting, losing part of its original fabric. Local residents hope to see the ruin preserved and opened for tourism.

Visiting

Ayaklıalan Church is an important stop bearing witness to Asarcık's multicultural past, reachable via a short walk through the quiet village and of interest to photography enthusiasts.
