A Showcase of Timber Architecture
Gökgöl Mosque is a historic village mosque built entirely of wood, located in Akyazı village within Asarcık district. Its inscription dates construction to 1767 (H. 1180).
History
The mosque underwent its first major repair in 1870 and was repaired again in 1970. Its architectural style reflects 16th-century wooden mosque traditions, placing it among Turkey's "nail-less mosques."
Architectural Features
The square-plan prayer hall was later expanded on three sides with a brick-built, U-shaped narthex. Its double-leaf wooden doors and fine woodworking are among its most notable details.
Surroundings
Ottoman-era gravestones made of local stone stand around the mosque, their inscribed dates and names adding to the site's historical record. The mosque remains an active place of worship and an important part of Asarcık's cultural heritage.
