The Only Island in a Reservoir
Kirazlık Island, formerly known as Zevgar Island, lies within the Suat Uğurlu reservoir in Ayvacık district. It holds the distinction of being the only island located inside a dam lake anywhere in Turkey, making it one of the region's most unusual natural landmarks.
How It Formed
The island formed naturally when the Suat Uğurlu Dam, built on the Yeşilırmak River between 1975 and 1981, raised the water level and submerged the surrounding land, leaving a former hilltop standing above the surface as an island.
Natural Character
There is no construction or settlement on the island; it remains covered in dense greenery, forming a distinctive silhouette amid the lake's blue waters. Wildlife can also be observed there, and the island is preserved in its natural state.
Visiting
The island is reached by boat tours departing from Ayvacık town center, popular with both domestic and foreign visitors. The lake views and lush surroundings make it a favorite spot for nature photography.
