Balık Lake

Where the Delta Meets the Sea

Also known locally as Ulu Göl, Balık Lake is a coastal bar lake in the eastern part of the Kızılırmak Delta. Unlike the delta's other lakes, such as Karaboğaz, Cernek, Liman, Gıcı, Tatlı, and Uzun, it has a direct connection to the Black Sea, giving it the highest salinity of the group. The lake averages about 1.5 meters in depth, reaching up to 3 meters when water levels are highest.

Wildlife and Fishing

Its sea connection means the lake hosts both freshwater and brackish-water species, making it, true to its name ("Fish Lake"), an important local fishing ground. The reed beds along its shores and the surrounding wetland provide feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds, as in other parts of the delta.

Visiting

Located roughly 10-15 kilometers from central Bafra, the lake is a notable stop on any tour of the Kızılırmak Delta for visitors seeking nature photography, birdwatching, or a quiet coastal view.
