A Ramsar Wetland of International Importance

Formed over millennia by sediment carried by the Kızılırmak River as it reaches the Black Sea, the Kızılırmak Delta is one of Turkey's most significant wetland ecosystems. Its bird sanctuary zone is registered under the Ramsar Convention, which protects wetlands of international importance. It lies about 18 kilometers from central Bafra, near Doğanca village.

Birdwatching and Wildlife

A mosaic of lakes, reed beds, dunes, and brackish-to-freshwater transition zones provides shelter, feeding grounds, and breeding habitat for hundreds of migratory and resident bird species. Pelicans, herons, ducks, geese, and cormorants are regularly observed, and the delta serves as a critical refuge for several globally threatened species. Traditional water-buffalo herding also continues here as part of the area's natural landscape.

Visitor Information

Observation towers and a visitor center within the delta offer information panels and telescopes for nature watching. The reserve is generally open from 08:00 to 18:00. Trails suitable for walking or cycling see the most active birdlife during winter and spring.
