Atatürk House Museum

History

The Atatürk House Museum is a historic building on Atatürk Street in the Medrese neighborhood of Havza district, Samsun. Believed to have been built in the early 1900s, the building was known at the time as the Mesudiye Hotel. Mustafa Kemal Pasha used it as his headquarters between May 25 and June 13, 1919, while serving as Inspector of the 9th Army; for this reason the building is regarded as the first headquarters of the National Struggle.

Museum and Collection

The brick building was registered as an immovable cultural asset and later restored and converted into a museum. It displays a total of 79 ethnographic artifacts; period photographs, documents and personal belongings tell visitors the story of the early days of the National Struggle. The first presidential insignia, which Mustafa Kemal Pasha gifted to Havza on September 24, 1924, is preserved on the wall of the room where he stayed.

Visitor Information

Located in central Havza, close to the Samsun-Ankara highway, the museum is an important stop for visitors interested both in the history of the National Struggle and in the brick architecture of the period. The museum is regarded as an important documentary resource shedding light on the National Struggle period.
