Amisos Hill

History

The ancient city of Amisos was founded on Toraman Hill, northwest of Samsun's city center, by Milesian colonists in the 6th century BC. The city experienced its golden age as one of the administrative centers of the empire under Pontic King Mithridates VI.

Royal Tombs

Excavations carried out in 1995 uncovered two tumuli on the hill believed to belong to the Pontic royal family. Wooden walkways lead visitors to the burial chambers, allowing a close view of their interior structure. Valuable finds from the excavations, including buckles, bracelets, a crown and earrings, are known as the "Amisos Treasures."

Getting There

The hill can be reached by road or by the cable car departing from Batı Park, which opened in 2006. The roughly 320-meter cable car line offers a bird's-eye view of Samsun's coastline and harbor along the way.
