History

The Gazi Museum occupies the historic Mıntıka Palas building, built as a hotel in 1902. When Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived in Samsun on 19 May 1919, he stayed in this building, and he used it again during later visits in 1928 and 1930. The people of Samsun gifted the building to Atatürk in 1924.

Becoming a Museum

The building was converted into a museum in 1940, declared a protected cultural property in 1985, and transferred to the Ministry of Culture in 1995 before reopening to visitors on 8 November 1998. It underwent a major restoration in 2006.

Collection

The museum displays personal belongings Atatürk used during his stay in Samsun, along with period furniture and documents. The upper floor houses wax figures representing the eighteen companions who accompanied him on the journey to Samsun.
