History
Saathane Square takes its name from the historic clock tower rising at its center. Construction of the tower began in 1886 on what was then known as İskele Square, and it opened in 1887. Over the years, the tower also served as a fire watchtower.
The Tower and Surrounding Buildings
The clock tower was damaged and demolished after the 1943 Ladik earthquake, rebuilt in 1977, and restored between 2000 and 2001 by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality to match its original 1886 design. Historic structures around the square include the Taşhan caravanserai, the Şifa Bathhouse, and the Süleyman Paşa Madrasah and Mosque.
Present-Day Appearance
Restoration works begun in 2016 reshaped the square, which today features stone paving, seating areas and cafés, making it a gathering point that reflects Samsun's historic character.
