History
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his eighteen companions, having arrived on the Bandırma Ship, came ashore at Tütün İskelesi on the morning of 19 May 1919. This moment is regarded as the symbolic starting point of the Turkish War of Independence.
Liberation Road
The road leading from the pier to the Mıntıka Palas (today's Gazi Museum), where Atatürk stayed that day, was named Kurtuluş Yolu ("Liberation Road"). This 400-meter-long, 45-meter-wide ceremonial road has been turned into an open-air exhibition featuring ornamental pools, quotations from Atatürk, and ceramic reliefs.
Today
The pier was rebuilt with a representative model of the Bandırma Ship and wax figures depicting Atatürk and those who welcomed him, dressed in period military attire, and reopened to visitors on 19 May 2009.
