Bekdemir Village Wooden Mosque

History

Bekdemir Village Wooden Mosque stands in the Bekdemir neighborhood on the Kavak-Asarcık road. Its foundation inscription bears the date 1873 (Hijri 1294), and it is known as one of the region's most remarkable nail-free wooden mosques. Also called the "Bekdemir Nail-free Mosque," it is a significant example of the Black Sea region's wooden religious architecture.

Architecture and Decoration

As its name suggests, the mosque was built without a single nail, using traditional wooden joinery techniques. Inside, the ceiling, gallery, mihrab and minbar are decorated with floral motifs, geometric patterns and calligraphic bands painted with root-based dyes. This rich hand-painted ornamentation sets the building apart among Samsun's wooden mosques.

The Beehive Tradition

A special compartment in the mihrab allowed bees to enter from outside and produce honey. According to local tradition, the roughly 150 kilograms of honey harvested each year covered expenses such as the mosque's carpets, oil lamp and caretaker's wages, with any surplus used for village feasts. This unusual tradition remains one of the mosque's best-known stories.
