History
Çakallı Han is a 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai in Çakallı neighborhood of Kavak district, on the old Samsun-Amasya road. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Kaykhusraw II, serving as an important stop for caravans on the Black Sea branch of the Silk Road. It is the only surviving Seljuk caravanserai in Samsun province.
Architecture
The rectangular structure consists of an open courtyard and a covered section formed by a large central vault flanked by two side vaults. Thick cut-stone walls and a tall entrance portal reflect typical caravanserai architecture of the period. Ottoman-era elements were added during repairs carried out in 1650.
Today
The caravanserai underwent extensive restoration between 2011 and 2012 and reopened to visitors. It now operates as a family-friendly restaurant while preserving its historic character. The site also lies along the route Mustafa Kemal Atatürk followed from Samsun to Havza on 25 May 1919.
