An Ancient Site Carved in Stone
Garpu Castle sits atop a forested hill within the boundaries of Konakören village in Salıpazarı district, a historic site shaped directly into the rock. Locally it is also known as the "Amazon Castle," though its exact age and builders remain unknown.
Architectural Traces
The site features a rock-cut staircase, an arched entrance, altar-like arrangements, and a cistern carved into the natural rock. Observations suggest the site may have functioned as an open-air sanctuary or rock altar, though no archaeological excavation has been carried out here yet.
Location and Views
The castle occupies a commanding position overlooking the Çarşamba Plain and surrounding countryside. The trail to the summit passes through rich vegetation filled with birdsong, and the top offers sweeping views of the district and nearby valleys.
Visitor Information
The site is reached by a roughly 1-2 kilometer hike beyond the end of the vehicle road. It is a favorite stop in Salıpazarı for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
