Tekkeköy Caves Archaeology Valley

History

The Tekkeköy Caves Archaeology Valley, in Samsun's Tekkeköy district, is considered the known oldest settlement area in the Black Sea Region. Research in the valley's caves and rock shelters has shown that human presence here dates back to the Old Stone Age. The first scientific excavations were carried out in 1941 by a team led by archaeologist İsmail Kılıç Kökten. The valley was placed under protection in 1977 and opened to visitors in the summer of 2013.

Archaeological Finds

Excavations have uncovered stone-worked arrow and spear points, axes, and cutting and scraping tools, along with Bronze Age ceramics, jewelry and needles. The valley also contains the remains of a Phrygian fortress and traces of a Hittite road thought to have been used by high-ranking officials. Recovered artifacts are displayed at the Samsun Archaeology and Ethnography Museum.

Visitor Information

The Museum House, opened within the valley in 2014, introduces visitors to prehistoric life through scale models and replicas recreating the period. The site also offers picnic areas, paid restaurants and a children's playground. Entry to the valley is free.
