Lake Simenit

Formation

Lake Simenit is a coastal lagoon lake in the eastern part of the Yeşilırmak delta, within Terme district. Once a small Black Sea cove, the area was gradually sealed off by alluvium carried by coastal currents, forming the lake seen today. The opening of drainage channels and continued alluvial deposits narrowed the wetland, splitting it into two separate lakes known as Simenit and Akgöl. The lake has historically also been called Semenlik, Simenlik, Karasu and Arapsazı.

Geographic Features

The lake is mostly 1 to 2 meters deep, reaching up to 5 meters in places, with a mix of fresh and brackish water.

Ecological Importance and Protection

Lake Simenit is home to more than 200 bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, herons and wild ducks. A 3,355-hectare Wildlife Development Area has been established around the lake. The Simenit and Akgöl wetlands were registered as a "strictly protected sensitive area" on March 15, 2023.
