Bafra Kızılırmak Nature Route

About the Route

Following the Kızılırmak River, the lifeline of Bafra district, this nature route starts at the delta plain where the river meets the Black Sea and runs south to a large reservoir further inland. Because the stops are dozens of kilometers apart, this is a route for driving only — it isn't suited to walking or cycling.

Route Logic and Getting There

The journey begins at the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Paradise, right where the river reaches the sea. One of Turkey's most important wetlands, the delta lies along major bird migration routes and hosts hundreds of species. From there the route heads south to Balık Gölü (Fish Lake), a freshwater lake within the delta, then back northwest to Karaboğaz Gölü, closer to the coast — together the two lakes let you compare the delta's saltwater and freshwater ecosystems. The route then turns inland, crossing the river at Çetinkaya Bridge, before finishing at Altınkaya Reservoir, one of the large dam lakes on the Kızılırmak.

Estimated Time and Distance

The total one-way distance is around 90-100 kilometers, so plan the whole route as a full day's drive: about 2-2.5 hours of driving alone, or 6-7 hours including time at each stop. Setting off early in the morning makes it comfortably possible to be back in Bafra by evening.

Best Season and Time of Day

Bird-watching is best from late autumn through early spring, when migratory birds and wintering swans gather in the delta; early morning is the calmest time to observe them. In summer, the area around Altınkaya Reservoir is popular for cooling off and enjoying the lake views.

Local Tip

It's worth checking in advance whether the Bird Paradise has an observation tower or binocular rentals, and moving quietly helps avoid startling the birds. The village coffeehouses around Çetinkaya Bridge serve fresh fish and gözleme, an ideal stop halfway through the long drive. Mobile signal can be weak at some points along the route, so it's worth setting off with a paper map or a pre-downloaded one.
