The Route and Why This Order

This route packs İlkadım's historic center into a single, fully walkable outing that can easily be finished in an afternoon. It begins at Saathane Meydanı, home to the clock tower that is Samsun's most recognizable landmark, whose surrounding streets naturally lead into the rest of the walk. From the square, a ten-minute stroll south along the pedestrian-heavy Kazımpaşa Avenue brings you to Cumhuriyet Meydanı, the administrative and commercial heart of the city and a hub where several transit lines meet — routing the walk through here means experiencing the city from the inside rather than around its edges. The Onur Anıtı monument sits right next to the square, and the Gazi Museum is only a short walk further, close enough that no separate leg needs to be planned between the two; visiting them back to back lets the story of the War of Independence unfold in one continuous thread rather than in disconnected stops. From there the route heads a little further south to the City Museum, deliberately placed near the end rather than in the middle, since it puts everything already seen at the squares and monuments into a broader historical context. The final stop, Tütün İskelesi Pier and Liberation Road, is saved for last on purpose: this stretch drops down toward the seafront and feels noticeably more open and scenic than the rest of the day, making it a natural place to unwind after a walk full of monuments and museums.

Duration, Distance and Getting Around

The walking distance between stops adds up to roughly 2.5 kilometers, and with time spent at each stop the whole route comfortably fits into 3 to 3.5 hours. No car is needed — in fact, given how hard parking can be in central İlkadım, walking is simply the more practical option. Minibuses and city buses run frequently between the squares, so anyone who gets tired can hop on public transport at almost any point along the way.

Best Time to Go

In summer, starting between 9 and 12 in the morning or after 5 in the afternoon helps you avoid the midday heat; timing the final stop at Tütün İskelesi close to sunset makes the seafront view considerably more rewarding. In winter, it is worth checking opening hours for the indoor stops in advance, since some of them close earlier than expected on weekday afternoons.

A Local Tip

The side streets between Cumhuriyet Meydanı and Onur Anıtı hide small simit stands and tea houses well off the main tourist strip, where prices are noticeably lower than at the cafés facing the square — this is where locals actually take their daily break. Finishing the walk with a glass of tea at Tütün İskelesi while watching the Black Sea is the easiest way to close out İlkadım like someone who actually lives there.
