Kavak-Asarcık-Vezirköprü Inland Route

A Long Inland Loop Linking Kavak, Asarcık, and Vezirköprü

Designed for travelers who want to see the side of Samsun that appears once you move away from the coast, this route ties together the districts of Kavak, Asarcık, and Vezirköprü in a single itinerary. Its main thread runs from the region's timber mosque architecture through Byzantine-era remains to Ottoman religious complexes and a natural canyon.

The route begins in Kavak district at Çakallı Han, a stop along a historic caravan road. From there it continues to Dere Mosque near the district center, then out into the countryside to Bekdemir Village Wooden Mosque; together, these three give a good sense of the region's local tradition of timber mosque craftsmanship. After Kavak, the route turns east into Asarcık district, stopping first at Gökgöl Mosque and then at the rural Ayaklıalan Church ruins, which carry a rare trace of the area's pre-Ottoman layers.

The longest leg of the route is the transfer from Asarcık to Vezirköprü — the direct distance between the two districts is considerable, making this the day's longest drive. Once in Vezirköprü, the route stops at Taceddin Pasha Mosque in the district center and the neighboring Fazıl Ahmet Pasha Madrasah; since the two are within walking distance of each other, they can be treated as a single stop. The route closes with two natural sites outside the town: the striking view at Şahinkaya Canyon, followed by Vezirsuyu Nature Park, well suited to picnics and short walks.

Getting There and Timing

This is a long, nine-stop route spanning three districts; the total distance runs to around 150 kilometers, and driving time alone takes several hours. By private car, plan a full day — roughly 9 to 10 hours including stops. For those short on time, a realistic alternative is to split it in two: the mosque and church stops in Kavak and Asarcık on the first day, and the Vezirköprü complex and natural sites on the second.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are best, both for driving comfort and for walking at Şahinkaya Canyon and Vezirsuyu Nature Park; the canyon and park sections can feel taxing in the midday heat of summer.

Local Tip

Finishing the two Vezirköprü stops (the mosque and the madrasah) before noon and leaving the rest of the day for the natural sites works better for both light and temperature.
