Salıpazarı-Ayvacık Valley and Waterfall Route

About the Route

Linking two neighboring districts in southeastern Samsun, Ayvacık and Salıpazarı, this route strings together valleys and waterfalls for travelers who want to leave the coast behind and discover the province's lesser-known inland nature. It begins near the center of Ayvacık at Kirazlık Island; this small island on the river was chosen as the first stop both for its easy access and for the calm start it offers before the rest of the route.

From Kirazlık Island the route heads south, down to Yeşilpınar Waterfall. The short distance between the two stops keeps the first half of the day at an easy pace. The forest cover around the falls provides natural shade from the midday heat, which is why it is worth taking the lunch break here.

In the afternoon the route turns northeast into Salıpazarı district. The first stop is Karacaören Waterfall; since it carries a heavier flow of water than Yeşilpınar, it is best saved for the second half of the day, when the light is softer. From Karacaören the route continues east and finishes at Garpu Castle; perched on a hilltop, the castle makes a fitting close to the day with views over the valleys visited earlier and the surrounding greenery.

Getting There and Timing

The roads between stops run largely through mountain and valley terrain, so they wind considerably; the straight-line distance looks short, but driving time should be planned accordingly. The total route covers roughly 45-55 kilometers, about 1.5-2 hours of driving alone. Since reaching the water at the falls involves short walking trails, the route with breaks stretches to a bit more than half a day. Going by private car is the most practical option, as public transport between these stops is infrequent.

Best Time to Go and a Local Tip

Spring, April through June, is the best time for water flow at the falls; by late summer, water levels can drop noticeably. Local tip: Karacaören Waterfall gets busier with local visitors on weekend afternoons, so going on a weekday or in the morning means a calmer visit and easier parking. Waiting for the last light of the day at Garpu Castle makes a fitting close to the route; there is ample parking space around the castle, so there is no need to rush the final stop.
